Life After an Accident | Bonita’s Story

A documentary portrait about losing an eye in a car accident and rebuilding life step by step.

Episode

Bonita (32) lost her eye in a serious car accident when another driver lost control on an icy road. The crash left her blind in one eye and with several broken bones.

After weeks in the hospital and months of rehabilitation she had to face another difficult step: the removal of her damaged eye. The medical process that followed brought unexpected complications and a long recovery.

Beyond the physical impact, Bonita also had to process the emotional side of losing an eye and adjusting to a new identity. With the support of her children and others around her, she continues to rebuild her life.

Her story is about resilience, acceptance and learning to move forward after trauma.

Format

This film is part of a series of documentary portraits produced for Oog in Oog, a Dutch association supporting people who have lost an eye or live with an eye condition.

Each film follows one person and explores how losing an eye or living with limited vision affects everyday life. The portraits focus on personal experiences, medical journeys and the emotional impact of adapting to a new reality.

Together the stories reveal the diversity of causes and experiences behind life with one eye, while showing how people find their own ways to adapt and move forward.
