Surviving Eye Cancer | Milan’s Story

A documentary portrait of a young boy who survived retinoblastoma and learned to live with an eye prosthesis.

Episode

Milan (9) was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer, when he was still a baby. After his parents noticed something unusual in photographs, a long and intense medical journey began.

Over the years Milan underwent numerous treatments including chemotherapy, cryotherapy, radiation and injections directly into the eye. Eventually the cancer was successfully treated in Germany.

Today Milan lives with an eye prosthesis and reduced vision. With the help of assistive tools at school and strong support from his family, he continues to live an active life and even plays golf.

His story is about resilience, family strength and growing up after surviving cancer.

Format

This film is part of a series of documentary portraits produced for Oog in Oog, a Dutch association supporting people who have lost an eye or live with an eye condition.

Each film follows one person and explores how losing an eye or living with limited vision affects everyday life. The portraits focus on personal experiences, medical journeys and the emotional impact of adapting to a new reality.

Together the stories reveal the diversity of causes and experiences behind life with one eye, while showing how people find their own ways to adapt and move forward.
