Living with an Eye Prosthesis | Henny’s Story

A documentary portrait about life after eye cancer and adapting to an eye prosthesis.

Episode

Henny (78) worked for many years as a medical assistant before being diagnosed with eye melanoma in 2018.

After experiencing vision problems doctors discovered the cancer and her eye had to be removed. She now lives with a permanent eye prosthesis and continues to be checked regularly for potential spread of the disease.

Despite the diagnosis and the surgery, Henny focuses on continuing her daily life. She enjoys reading, swimming and going to the cinema, adapting to the limitations that come with having one eye.

Her story reflects on acceptance, resilience and the quiet adjustments that allow life to continue.

Format

This film is part of a series of documentary portraits produced for Oog in Oog, a Dutch association supporting people who have lost an eye or live with an eye condition.

Each film follows one person and explores how losing an eye or living with limited vision affects everyday life. The portraits focus on personal experiences, medical journeys and the emotional impact of adapting to a new reality.

Together the stories reveal the diversity of causes and experiences behind life with one eye, while showing how people find their own ways to adapt and move forward.
