Case Study
The Search for Better Biomarkers
For the European Federation of Crohn’s & Ulcerative Colitis Associations (EFCCA), Cooltuur produced a two-part documentary series exploring the future of inflammatory bowel disease research. The films follow scientists working to better understand Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and develop new tools that could improve diagnosis and treatment.
A key focus of the project was the search for biomarkers: biological signals that may help doctors predict how the disease will develop in individual patients. Alongside the scientific perspective, the documentaries also explore the personal experiences of patients living with inflammatory bowel disease.
The challenge
The challenge was to translate complex biomedical research into a film that remained understandable, emotionally engaging and visually compelling for a broader audience of patients, healthcare professionals and stakeholders.
The subject matter itself is highly specialised and often difficult to communicate outside of scientific or medical environments.
At the same time, the films needed to remain emotionally grounded and relatable for people personally affected by inflammatory bowel disease.
The documentaries therefore needed to balance:
Scientific credibility
Human emotion
Accessibility
International communication
Documentary storytelling
Our approach
Cooltuur developed the project using a documentary-driven approach in which interviews formed the narrative backbone of the films.
Rather than presenting the research in a purely explanatory or academic way, the documentaries were designed around personal experiences and human perspective.
By combining scientific insight with patient experiences, the films aim to make complex research emotionally accessible without oversimplifying the subject.
The production included:
Concept development
Documentary direction
Interview production
Cinematography
Editing and post-production
Subtitle workflows
International production coordination
Production style
The visual style was designed to feel cinematic and human rather than corporate.
Instead of relying on promotional messaging, the films focus on real conversations, atmosphere and personal perspective.
Interview cinematography, natural lighting and observational moments were used to create a grounded and authentic tone throughout the documentaries.
The films were intentionally paced in a calm and accessible way, allowing scientific topics and emotional experiences to complement each other naturally.
This approach helps audiences connect not only with the research itself, but also with the people behind it.
Why documentary storytelling works for research and innovation
Research and innovation projects often deal with highly complex subjects that can be difficult to communicate to broader audiences.
Documentary storytelling helps organizations make complex subjects more accessible and human. By focusing on real people, personal experiences and authentic conversations, research and innovation become easier to understand and more emotionally engaging for broader audiences.
This approach can help build trust and credibility while also creating communication assets with long-term value beyond a single campaign or project launch.
For research projects, healthcare organizations, universities, NGOs and public sector initiatives, documentary storytelling offers a way to communicate not only information, but also perspective, atmosphere and human impact.
